A study in the American Journal Ophthalmology (2010;149:785-93) compared visual acuity and corneal higher order aberrations after LASIK surgery with flaps made by a femtosecond (Intralase) laser to one created using a mechanical microkeratome. The results did not show any differences in visual acuity outcomes or induced aberrations. This study shows that mechanical keratomes will continue to be used favorably in refractive surgery.
