Dr Weingarten performs laser surgery for glaucoma treatment. He uses the Lumenis SLT in his Rochester office. SLT (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty) has been shown to deliver powerful intraocular pressure reduction without causing any thermal damage. It can be used as primary therapy or as adjunctive to medical treatment. The majority of glaucoma patients have been shown to be noncompliant with taking their glaucoma prescriptions. SLT has been shown to reduce patient dependence on topical medications and save them money. If you live in the Detroit Metropolitan area (Rochester, Auburn Hills, Lake Orion, Troy, Bloomfield Hills, Utica, Sterling Heights) and are interested in finding out if you’re a candidate for SLT treatment, call our office at 248-650-2255 for a glaucoma evaluation.

A study in the American Journal Ophthalmology (2010;149:785-93) compared visual acuity and corneal higher order aberrations after LASIK surgery with flaps made by a femtosecond (Intralase) laser to one created using a mechanical microkeratome. The results did not show any differences in visual acuity outcomes or induced aberrations. This study shows that mechanical keratomes will continue to be used favorably in refractive surgery. If you are interested in LASIK/LASEK/PRK refractive laser surgery, and would like a FREE EVALUATION with Dr. Mark Weingarten, a board certified ophthalmologist and laser surgeon at Rochester Eye Care call 248-650-2255.

Diabetic Retinopathy is a leading cause of legal blindness among adults 20-74 years old in the United States. A study in JAMA (8/11) found that nearly 30 percent of diabetics over age 40 have diabetic retinopathy, with about 4 percent of this group having vision threatening retinopathy. Additional risk factors include male sex, higher HbA1c level, longer duration, use of insulin and higher systolic blood pressure. If you are diabetic, you should have your eyes examined by an ophthalmologist at least once per year and more frequently if diabetic retinopathy is present. Dr. Mark Weingarten is aboard certified ophthalmologist at Rochester Eye Care. If you are in need of eye care in the Detroit Metropolitan area or Oakland County, you can call his office at 248-650-2255 to schedule a diabetic eye evaluation.
